Environment Agency to extend RPS 207 on waste wood classification

October 12, 2018

The Environment Agency has extended an interim measure to continue to allow wood recyclers to handle waste wood which might contain hazardous material.

Regulatory Position Statement (RPS) 207 was scheduled to be withdrawn on 1st November 2018. It has now been extended until 30th September 2019.

The RPS has been extended so the Environment Agency can continue their investigations into the classification of waste wood. This was prompted by the European Commission when it asked why just 2% of wood in the UK is deemed as hazardous, while in other countries in the EU this figure is as high as 15%.

The investigations have been based on the model used in Germany, but it is still unknown whether they will be implemented once the RPS has finished. Discussions are still ongoing on what method the UK will take.
